How to show a graph in a tooltip with Tableau

Ever wondered how to show a graph in a tooltip with Tableau?

In this example, I’ll show a very simple and quick example of how you embed a graph in another graph’s tooltip.

Suppose you have a graph that shows the revenue and the forecasted revenue over time but I want to show more detail by including revenue on the tooltip.

The first step is to have both your graphs ready and with all the format options you want.

In this example, I’ve created a stacked bar graph as the primary graph.  I’ve also created a bar graph that I will use in the tooltip.

Note: Remember that for the graph that will be embedded you won’t allow the user to hover over it, so it’s a good idea to put labels that will show the values on the graph itself.

Let’s get started

1. On the main sheet, over the Mark section, select the Tooltip button of the graph you want to display the other graph:

2. While inside the tooltip options, click on Insert, Sheets, and then you select the sheet you want to embed in your tooltip.

3. Click OK.

4. All done

This is the final outcome.

There you have it.  Now you can add extra interactive value to your dashboard when you show a graph in a tooltip with Tableau.
