Tableau – comparing bars

We’re going to start from the end of the previous tutorial (Union)

In an empty sheet, drag and drop the Subdivision and Employee pills into the Rows shelf.

The next step is to bring the values, so we can show them as a bar.

Bring the Measure Values pill to the Columns shelf.

Now we have all the values inside one bar, with no distinction of what is what.

Next step is to bring the Measure Names pill to the Color button.

This will make the Measure Names to appear in the Filters section as well.

As we have a few different types of leave, let’s create a new calculated field that will hold all the leave information.

To do that, we’ll click on the dropdown button existent in the Data section in the left-hand side of the window, and select “Create Calculated Field…” as shown here:

Then use Leave as the name and this formula to aggregate all our leave types in just one place:

Now we’ll filter the Measure Names, so we only show the relevant information.

Right click on the Measure Names in the Filter section and select “Edit filter…”

Let’s unselect all (click on None to clear the selection) and then select the following measures:

  • Leave
  • N/C
  • Paid Overtime Hrs
  • Project Hours

This will be the result:

But we’re not quite there yet.

Let’s make the N/C (Non-Chargeable) and Leave appear as negative values, so we can have all the chargeable time above 0 and all the non-chargeable time below zero.

To do that, edit the pills and add a “-“ at the beginning of if, making them negative.

Now you can format the fields, fix the tooltip, change the alias for the measure names and make it more visually appealing.
